Musings from a Meandering, Mischievous Mind

Drug Right Through It.

In May 2010 I reported right here on the pages of RobZerrvations that I had stopped taking my Lexapro. As you may recall, it wasn't for depression, but anxiety. I admit that it was always hard to convince a traveling insurance company nurse that anxiety was the problem, not depression. They usually look at you when you say you're taking Lexapro, nod their head, jot down a couple notes on their paper, and a couple weeks later, a rejection arrives in the mail that your triglycerides were too...

I’d Like The Skull And Crossbones.

A couple days ago, I saw an article about a tattoo artist who was told he couldn't attend Career Day at his daughter's school because the principal had received complaints the year before about his profession, which they said, encouraged kids to adopt unsavory lifestyle choices. It is well established here that I am not a fan of tattoo. I don't personally care if others want to cover their entire bodies with tattoos. Whatever floats your boat. Will I date you? Sure, if I think I can do the...

What A Bunch Of Ding Dongs.

Growing up, I don't remember a time when there wasn't a Ding Dong in my life. I could get a wonderful Ho-Ho any time of the year, even when it wasn't Christmas. And if I was really desperate, I could get in a couple of Zingers with my friends. But now, it looks like many of our childhood favorites will never see the light of day again. Unless you buried a couple cases of Twinkies in the backyard, you may never be able to dazzle the young'uns with the magic of sucking all the creamy white...

Sickos.

I went to a party a couple days ago. As is often the case, I tend to be one of the older ones who attends. I guess that happens over time. You stop going to the parties of friends who are older than you largely because they're not having parties any more - they're dead. So you're faced with the choice of going to a lot of wakes or accepting invitations to parties where everyone is still alive. Such was the case with this party. I have no problems hanging around people who are younger than I...

A Closed Door Policy.

If you only read RobZerrvations casually and don't really know me personally, beyond what I write here, I probably come across as being a pretty open guy. Sure, I write about my failed relationships, historic meltdowns, miscues and shortcomings, but there's a lot more that is never said and probably never will be. My head is filled with doors. Thousands of them. Some of them are so open I've taken off the door at the hinges, just so it's easier to get in when I want to. But other doors remain...

Rational Rationale.

I am not a very rational person. I don't know if it was in my DNA or if I just was left alone for too long growing up. I have always thought out of the box. I have never been extremely logical, having to drop out of Logic 101 in college because none of the rational, logical arguments made any sense to me. Thankfully, my irrationality has been vindicated. If you remember back to your Aesop's fables, there was the story of the crow and the pitcher. The thirsty crow found a pitcher that was half...

Aloha-Oy Vay.

I was sitting at breakfast a couple weeks ago. It's not often that I eat out, but when you're in a hotel and the breakfast is free, it's hard to ignore, let alone turn down. I gathered my breakfast goodies and took a seat across from three gentlemen. As always, I eavesdropped on their conversation. The stories of others fascinate me to no end, and this one was no exception. It wasn't so much the story, but the sharing of vacation experiences. One of the men was heading to Hawaii and the other...

Living in Neverland.

One of the really cool things about getting my life back and coming to Seattle is that my close friends say I look and act a lot younger than I used to. I'm not the old man I had become down in Florida. I'm back to my old self, a bit whacked, full of mischief and with more than a slight bit of devilishness in my heart and soul. I have always been a big kid. Even when I was in Florida, somewhere deep inside of that old man was that little kid, screaming to get out. Whenever he did, he was...

The Devil You Know.

Tuesday's election was indeed historic. Now, before anyone jumps up and down and hoots and hollers, I'm not talking about who won. Rather, I'm talking about who didn't. A couple billion dollars passed hands in the past year or so, the most costly election in history. And what changed? Nothing. As the Janmeister and I talked about this somewhat stupifying election, she passed on something her grandma once said, "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know." It is a sad truth in...

40 Love.

A coworker of mine turns 40 this weekend. I think he's looking forward to it, though I can't really say I was. And that's the beauty of the zero birthdays. You know, 20, 30, 40, 50... I can't list 60 yet because I'm not there, so I can't exactly qualify as an expert. But my poor old body has been through the other zero milestones and the coming of the anniversary of the birth of my marketing minion gave me pause to recount the passage of these years in my own life. If you're wondering where...

It Was Unintentional.

The Moth is hosting another Seattle soiree. If you don't know what The Moth is, it is all about storytelling, the oral tradition. There's no technology. Your story has to be true. It can't be read or rehearsed. And it has to follow the theme of the evening. Whether I ever decide to get on stage to do my five minutes remains to be seen. But I am certainly interested in the concept. As I've said here many times, telling stories is what makes the world go round, and if we didn't have stories, we...

Pot-Pourri.

If all goes according to plan, Washington State will lead the nation tomorrow in legalizing marijuana. Sure, some states already have legalized medical use of pot. We have that, too. But taking the federal government on and giving them a Washington State shaped raspberry is pretty visionary stuff, one that will not only bring thousands of pot smoking hippies to the state, but open the floodgates to innovation and invention as well. Assuming the feds don't come down on us like stogie parental...
